Skidmore College will eliminate its men's hockey program beginning with the 2004-05 season as part of a plan announced Wednesday to restructure the athletics program.
Skidmore president Philip A. Glotzbach said the decision to end the program was a difficult one.
``Shifting these resources to our remaining programs will enable us both to strike a better balance in our support for male and female athletes and to increase opportunities for the entire campus community to pursue a broader range of fitness activities,'' he said. Ticketmaster

The restructuring plan followed a two-year study of Skidmore's sports and recreation
offerings that warned cuts may be necessary. It called for upgrading coaching
positions in women's sports and expanding fitness and recreation programs. Ticketmaster
Skidmore athletic director Jeffrey Segrave said the men's hockey program was relatively expensive and that facilities for the sport were not available on campus.
The team finished last season with a 7-17-1 record. Skidmore will continue to offer men's and women's hockey clubs.
