Michael Nylander, expected to center the Washington Capitals' top scoring line, will miss four to six weeks after breaking his leg in practice, the team announced Friday.

Nylander sustained the break just above the ankle when he was checked against the boards by rookie defenseman Nolan Yonkman on Thursday. With the NHL regular season beginning Wednesday, Nylander could miss more than 15 games.

The injury will snap Nylander's consecutive games streak at 310 - the second-longest active run in the NHL. He will be sidelined for the first time since April 1999.
