One of the National Hockey League's youngest forwards will be skating alongside one of the league's oldest players now that Eric Staal has agreed to contract terms with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 18-year-old Canadian center, second in June's NHL Draft, has a three-year deal worth 1.24 million dollars plus performance bonuses.

Staal, who led the NHL with seven goals in pre-season games, will join a line that includes Jeff O'Neill and 40-year-old captain Ron Francis.

"Eric has clearly earned a spot on the Hurricanes with his exceptional play," Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said. "It is apparent that he will play an important role with the team at a very young age." Ticketmaster

Staal, whose cousin Jeff Heerema was Carolina's 1998 first-round pick, will try to revive a club that went to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals but finished last in the Southeast Division last season.
