The Florida Panthers signed center Nathan Horton, the third overall pick in the 2003 draft, to a three-year contract on Monday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 18-year-old Horton had three goals and an assist in four preseason contests with the Panthers, who made him their first-round selection after trading the No. 1 overall pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A 6-2, 201-pound center, Horton totaled 33 goals, 35 assists and 111 penalty minutes in 54 games with Oshawa of the Ontario Hockey League last season. He was among the league leaders with five shorthanded goals.

Horton also captured a gold medal with Canada's under-18 team in the 2002 Eight Nations Tournament in Slovakia. Ticketmaster

The Panthers begin the regular season Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes.
