Steve Shields was traded Sunday by the Boston Bruins to the Florida Panthers, who needed to strengthen their goaltending.
The Bruins received future considerations in the deal that came three days before the season opens.
Shields will replace backup goalie Jani Hurme, who was lost in Friday's NHL waiver draft. Roberto Luongo is Florida's starting goalie.

The move leaves Boston with goaltenders Andrew Raycroft and Felix Potvin. Potvin signed as a free agent before training camp.
Shields had a 12-13-9 record and 2.75 goals-against average in 36 games last season. He has spent nine years in the league and also played with Buffalo and San Jose. Ticketmaster
