The Florida Panthers on Sunday acquired goaltender Steve Shields from the Boston Bruins for future considerations.

Shields became expendable after the Bruins signed Felix Potvin and will likely serve as a backup to Roberto Luongo in Florida.

Shields went 12-13-9 with a 2.76 goals-against average in 36 games with the Bruins last season. He was traded to Boston by the Might Ducky of Anaheim for a 2003 third-round draft pick in June 2002.

The 31-year-old Shields went 1-1-0 with a 3.75 GAA this preseason for the Bruins, who made him available in Friday's NHL waiver draft. This will be his fifth NHL team, having played a combined 225 games for Buffalo, San Jose, Anaheim and Boston. Ticketmaster

"Steve has been and continues to be a solid NHL goaltender," said Panthers general manager Rick Dudley. "He's known as a good guy and he's been through a lot of different landscapes, including pressure situations in the playoffs. We think he's a great fit with Roberto Luongo in goal. When we started to contemplate moving (goaltender) Jani Hurme, he was a guy who, in our minds, was right at the top of the list."

Shields owns a career record of 76-96-38 with a 2.59 GAA and 10 shutouts. He also has appeared in 25 playoff games, going 9-16 with a 3.07 GAA.

The 6-3, 215-pound Toronto native played collegiate hockey at Michigan from 1990-94, ending his career there as the NCAA's all-time leader in victories with 111. Ticketmaster

Shields was drafted by Buffalo in 2001 and played parts of three seasons with the Sabres before going to San Jose in a trade. After three years, he was sent to Anaheim in the deal that brought Teemu Selanne to the Sharks.
