Bobby Holik and Anson Carter each scored first-period goals and backup goalie Jussi Markkanen stopped 19 shots as the New York Rangers defeated the defending Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils 2-0 in an exhibition game Friday night.

Holik beat his former teammates with a short-handed goal at the 10:06 mark of the first period, when he stole a pass near the top of the circle and put it through the legs of Vezina Trophy-winner Martin Brodeur.

Five minutes later, the Rangers capitalized on a double-minor penalty against Devils winger Jeff Friesen. Carter took a pass from Alexei Kovalev, sped past the Devils defenders and lifted a backhander past Brodeur. Ticketmaster

Markkanen, who was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers last June, was sharp in goal all night, especially during a second-period flurry when he stopped Patrik Elias from point-blank range twice in a four-minute span.

Markkanen is targeted to be the Rangers' No. 2 goalie this season behind starter Mike Dunham, while Dan Blackburn recovers from nerve damage in his shoulder.

Brodeur played the first 30 minutes, allowing the two goals and facing 12 shots. Backup Corey Schwab played the final 30 minutes and stopped all eight shots he faced.
