Robert Lang scored twice as the Washington Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in an exhibition game Friday night.

Peter Bondra also scored for Washington (3-3-1), which can clinch its first winning preseason since 1999-00 by beating the Hurricanes (2-5-0) in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday in the final tuneup for both teams.

Marty Murray and Eric Staal scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost four of five.

Lang's third preseason goal broke a scoreless tie 8:20 into the second period.

With several players crowded behind the Hurricanes' goal, Lang sneaked uncovered to the left post where he swatted a centering pass from Mike Grier past goalie Kevin Weekes. Ticketmaster

Bondra made it 2-0 with 4:11 left in the third period, converting a drop pass from Josef Boumedienne in the left circle.

Carolina, which failed on its first six power-play chances, ruined Olaf Kolzig's shutout bid on Murray's rebound on the power play with 2:51 remaining.

But Lang quickly restored the two-goal cushion, sliding the puck beneath Weekes as he fell to the ice on a dash between the circles. Ticketmaster

With five seconds left, Staal scored in a goal-mouth scramble, notching his team-high sixth goal.
